Irvine grew village by village, and the generator plan changes with the village. The villages on the 2025 state fire hazard map back up to open hillsides and carry the highest shutoff exposure. The central villages see fewer shutoffs, but tight side yards and HOA review decide where a unit goes. Tap your village to see it on the map.
Pelican Coast Electric handles generator installation in Irvine from load calculation to final inspection. We file the City of Irvine permit, set the pad, install the automatic transfer switch and connect the gas line. Installed prices run $16,400 to $35,450, and most Irvine homes fall between $16,400 and $21,500. Free on-site estimates in 92602, 92603, 92604, 92606, 92612, 92614, 92617, 92618 and 92620.
Irvine backs up to the Santiago Hills and Loma Ridge. The 2025 state fire hazard map, in effect in Irvine since July 23, 2025, reaches Orchard Hills, Woodbury, Portola Springs, Quail Hill, Turtle Rock and Irvine Spectrum. When the Silverado Fire started on October 26, 2020, about 70,000 people in Irvine were placed under evacuation orders.
SCE shuts off power by circuit, not ZIP code. On October 30, 2019, SCE listed Irvine among the Orange County areas at risk of a shutoff. See our full generator installation service for Orange County.

Each standby install includes a listed automatic transfer switch sized to your service, so your home stays isolated from the SCE line while the generator runs.

California C-10 contractor, license #1133193, insured. Licensed electricians install the generator and the transfer switch.

A written estimate, permit filing with the City of Irvine, and a full walkthrough of your system before we leave.
Irvine outages trace back to two causes. Both arrive with fire weather, and a standby generator responds to both the same way.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs
SCE calls a Public Safety Power Shutoff when high winds, dry brush and low humidity line up. Circuits running toward the Santiago Hills and Loma Ridge go dark together. SCE says some shutoffs last more than 24 hours.

Fire Emergencies
A nearby wildfire cuts power with no warning. During the Silverado Fire, evacuation orders covered Orchard Hills and homes south to Trabuco Road between Jeffrey Road and Portola High School.

Weather modeling starts
SCE forecasters begin tracking a possible fire weather event and the circuits in its path.

Initial notification
When forecasts allow, SCE aims to send the first alert to customers on circuits in scope about three days ahead. Timing varies by event. Look up your own address on the SCE outage map, since Irvine is served by many circuits.

Shutoff expected
SCE sends this notice when possible as a shutoff becomes imminent. Some events come with little or no advance notice. Our SCE Public Safety Power Shutoff guide walks through each alert.

Line inspection
After the weather clears, crews inspect the de-energized lines before restoring power. SCE says inspections typically take up to eight hours. The figure is typical, not a guaranteed restoration time.
A standby generator keeps your refrigerator, HVAC and home office running whether SCE gives three days of notice or none.
The City of Irvine reports that Irvine Ranch Water District is prepared to keep operating during an SCE shutoff. Your tap keeps running. Your refrigerator, HVAC and home office do not. Three steps close that gap before the next Santa Ana event.

The City of Irvine sends emergency and evacuation notices through AlertOC, Orange County’s alert system, by text, email and phone. Register your numbers at alertoc.org.

SCE shuts off power by circuit, not ZIP code. Sign up for PSPS alerts on your service address at sce.com/psps, then check the SCE outage map during a wind event.

HOA review, city plan review and equipment lead time all run before install day. Book your free load calculation in summer and your generator is permitted and tested before fall.
We are an authorized Generac dealer and install Kohler standby generators too. Most Irvine homes need an air-cooled 18kW or 24kW unit. Larger homes in Shady Canyon or Turtle Ridge sometimes need a liquid-cooled model.

Two questions decide your system: how much of the house you want powered, and whether someone will be home to start it.
The budget option for a few essential circuits. We install an inlet and a manual transfer switch. During an outage, you roll out your portable generator, plug in and flip the switch. Someone has to be home to run it.
Portable generator safety: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says to run a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house with the exhaust pointed away, and to keep working carbon monoxide alarms inside.

Starts on its own within seconds of an SCE outage and shuts down when power returns. A natural gas unit runs on your SoCalGas line, so you skip fuel runs during a long shutoff.
We install standby generators for Irvine homes from Northwood to Turtle Ridge and for businesses in Irvine Spectrum and the Irvine Business Complex. Most homes take an 18kW or 24kW unit.

Your estimate prices both a whole-home option and an essential-circuit option.
Load sets generator size, not square footage. A Woodbridge townhome with gas appliances needs far less than an Orchard Hills home with two AC units, a pool and an EV charger. Read our guide on what size whole house generator you need.
From Woodbridge townhomes to Turtle Ridge estates, most Irvine homes settle on an 18kW or a 24kW unit. Installed prices run $16,400 to $35,450, and most jobs fall between $16,400 and $21,500. Your written estimate prices the calculated size next to a managed-load option, and lists the HOA submittal and City of Irvine plan review steps for your village.
Authorized Generac dealer, CA C-10 license #1133193. One written scope covers the electrical, gas and permit work.
Four steps take your Irvine project from the first site visit to a tested, inspected generator.

Site Visit & Load Calculation
A licensed electrician checks your service size, panel, gas meter and yard clearances, then calculates your load. You receive the proposed pad location and a fixed written price.

Permits & Gas Coordination
We file with City of Irvine Building & Safety. Standby generators go through plan review, not same-day PermitsDIRECT!. HOA approval comes first, and we file any SoCalGas meter request at the same time.

Installation
Our crew sets the pad, anchors the generator, installs the transfer switch at your service and runs the gas line with a pressure test. Most homes take one to two days on site.

Inspection, Testing & Maintenance Setup
We meet the city inspector, test the system under load and show you the controller and the weekly self-test. Before leaving, we set your first maintenance visit.
⚡ Typical timeline: 1 to 2 days on site for most Irvine homes. City plan review, HOA approval and equipment lead time add to the calendar.
An Irvine standby generator clears up to six checkpoints before it goes live. Most Irvine villages have a community association that reviews exterior equipment, so the HOA comes first. We prepare every submittal and pull the permit under CA License #1133193. You sign the forms. We handle the rest.
Your association reviews the unit, the pad location and any screening. We supply the site plan, the manufacturer spec sheet and the sound rating your committee asks for.
Building & Safety at City Hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza, reviews the electrical, gas and placement plans. Standby generators go through plan review, not same-day PermitsDIRECT.
When the generator needs more gas than your current meter delivers, we file the SoCalGas meter request alongside the permit so neither one waits on the other.
Irvine caps daytime residential noise at 55 dBA (Sec. 6-8-204). We measure clearances from windows, doors and vents, and schedule the weekly self-test for daytime hours.
Orchard Hills, Portola Springs, Woodbury, Quail Hill and Turtle Rock sit on the 2025 map. We check your parcel’s designation and the building and fire requirements tied to it.
We meet the inspector on site, test the system under load and hand you the permit record, inspection sign-off and system documentation at closeout.
Answers to the questions Irvine homeowners raise before scheduling an estimate.
A standby generator from our crew typically runs $16,400 to $35,450 installed, and most homes land between $16,400 and $21,500. In Irvine, the biggest swings come from the lot and the village. A long gas run up a slope in Orchard Hills or Portola Springs, screening your HOA requires around the unit, a SoCalGas meter upgrade or a panel upgrade adds to the total. A short run beside a Woodbridge or Northwood home keeps the price near the low end. Our whole house generator cost guide lists each line item.
Size comes from a load calculation, not square footage. A Woodbridge or University Park townhome with gas cooking and one condenser covers its essentials with an 18kW unit. A Turtle Ridge or Orchard Hills home with two condensers, a pool and an EV charger moves to 24kW, and the largest Shady Canyon homes move to a liquid-cooled model. Rooftop solar on newer Great Park homes does not lower the size, because a grid-tied system shuts down when SCE power drops. We run the calculation at your free estimate and give you the number in writing.
Yes. A permanently installed standby generator needs a City of Irvine building permit covering the electrical work and the gas line. Generators are not on the city’s same-day PermitsDIRECT! list, so the application goes through plan review with Building & Safety at the Irvine Civic Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza. Civic Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Community Development’s number is (949) 724-6313. Many Irvine villages also have an HOA requiring architectural approval for exterior equipment. We prepare the application, pull the permit under license #1133193 and schedule the inspection.
Most Irvine installs take one to two days on site. The approvals take longer than the work. Your community association reviews the unit and pad location first. City of Irvine Building & Safety then runs plan review, since generators are not on the same-day PermitsDIRECT! list. When your load needs a bigger gas meter, we file the SoCalGas request alongside the permit so neither one waits on the other. You get a dated schedule with your estimate, and we recommend starting in summer so the unit is tested before Santa Ana season.
Yes. The transfer switch senses the loss of SCE voltage and starts the generator, whether the outage is a planned shutoff or a fire emergency like the 2020 Silverado Fire. Circuits running toward the Santiago Hills and Loma Ridge carry the most shutoff exposure in Irvine, and SCE says some shutoffs last more than 24 hours. The City of Irvine reports Irvine Ranch Water District is prepared to keep operating during a shutoff, and a natural gas unit draws from your SoCalGas line, so you keep water and fuel with no tank to refill.
Irvine units run on two clocks: the service interval in your owner’s manual and the run hours each shutoff adds. One day-long Santa Ana shutoff puts more hours on the engine than a year of weekly self-tests. We set that weekly self-test for daytime hours to stay within Irvine’s 55 dBA daytime limit. Log every service with a date, whoever does the work. Book one professional visit a year before wind season. Pelican Coast Electric offers annual maintenance for standby generators.
Each Irvine visit starts at the enclosure. HOA screening, landscaping and narrow side yards trap leaves, so we clear debris and check airflow first. In foothill villages on the fire hazard map, we check the clearance around the unit as well. Then comes the engine: oil and oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and a battery load test with clean terminals. We finish at the controller and the transfer switch, reviewing fault history and tightening connections. Our generator maintenance guide explains each step.
Yes, if the generator is sized for compressor startup, which draws several times the running current. Shutoffs arrive on hot, dry Santa Ana days, so Irvine designs treat the air conditioner as a must-run load. One condenser plus the rest of the house typically fits in the 18kW to 26kW range. A two-story plan with upstairs and downstairs condensers needs the top of that range, or load management that starts the two units one at a time. Your estimate prices both setups.
Every install meets the NEC, the California Electrical Code and City of Irvine rules. A listed transfer switch keeps generator power off the SCE line and protects line crews. Learn more about transfer switch installation.

The transfer switch isolates your home from the grid whenever the generator runs. Every system is grounded and bonded to code.

Built to the National Electrical Code and the California Electrical Code, then inspected by the City of Irvine.

Irvine grew village by village. Older villages like Turtle Rock and Woodbridge have tight side yards. Newer foothill villages like Orchard Hills and Portola Springs add slopes and longer gas runs.

HOA Villages & Tight Side Yards
Compact lots and HOA review shape placement. We measure clearances from windows, doors and vents, and set the weekly self-test during the day to meet Irvine’s 55 dBA daytime limit (Municipal Code Sec. 6-8-204). You get the spec sheet and site plan your HOA asks for.

Foothill Villages
Slopes limit pad locations, and longer runs between the meter, panel and pad add pipe and conduit. We check your property’s mapped fire-hazard designation and the applicable building and fire requirements when planning the generator location. Every placement is drawn and priced in your written estimate before equipment is ordered.
